Long story short. Had call center job I hated for 10 years. Discovered fitness, 8 years into that, got certified as a personal trainer.
Interviewed for a few jobs, never got hired. Decided to start training clients independently, in-home. Did tons of work and spent lots of money to get ready for that…
Fast forward a year or so…
Moved to new apartment, girlfriend and her child moved in. Started a new job in non-fitness field, close to doubling my income. Got engaged, supported the family because she is in school full time, planning wedding for several months.
I’ve put fitness on hold to take care of those other things. I still want to use my fitness knowledge to help people, and of course make more money for my family.
I currently work 4 days a week so I have time to train clients part-time.
I have the desire to this. I have the right personality and knowledge.
I know that I can be successful at this.
For some reason something is holding me back from making the final leap. I don’t know if it’s mental/psychological, or that I’m not as desperate as I was at my old job. I’ve considered even seeing a therapist. I want to get active again on the ideafit site, to get the gears turning again. I remember how passionate I was right when I got certified. I know I’m still the same person. I want to get back into PT. Any advice would be much appreciated.
Get connected to a group of local fitness pros in your area. Form a support group to help everyone involved. Fitness pros tend to be very solitary or part of a group where they work. Making a network of your own can really help keep things fresh.
Check out all of your local gyms. Find one or two that you are comfortable with and start working out there as much as possible. Then make contacts there. When you are ready, bring up the possibility of training there as an employee or as an independent contractor.
And most importantly, renew your certs if you haven’t already. Don’t forget your CPR/AED/FA.
I agree with most of the other responses. If the motivation is not there right now, it’s ok. Like you said you are in a different phase in your life and training might not be on the top of your list (which is why you are not that eager to get back into it). In my opinion, I don’t think a psychologist or a therapist will be able to help you since deep inside you probably already know the answer. Maybe you can start training people 1-2 days a week to see if this is what you want to do and if the desire is still there then you can look into more options.
Going to a few fitness conventions and seminars might help you with your decision to get back to this or not. There are a lot of new things in the industry which you can use in different ways and also give you a better perspective about the whole situation.

It seems to be that you did start back up again by asking your question. Read your own Fitness Connect page, you are motivated to help people. Answer questions here on www.ideafit.com, remember how that ambition felt when you became ACE certified, talk to your loved ones, and just go out telling people how you can help them whenever you hear a health conversation.
You could also check out www.SCORE.org for that extra nudge from retired successful entrepreneurs. Join a business group for more exposure, go to seminars for more exposure.
Do what you love, do your best at it and the rest should fall into place. Having another job in the meantime is very helpful.

The good news is, you’re in no hurry. You have a stable job that allows you free time to work with clients. Spend some time thinking about the type of clients you want to train, i.e. if you want to specialize in working with a certain demographic. Define what your mission is. Then interview studios of all sizes and styles. You have a luxury of finding just the right fit, which is amazing.
