How much do group instructors get paid?
That’s a huge question, and can be dependent on your geographic location, the amount you charge for your classes, instructor experience, class attendance, and whether you are hiring employees vs. independent contractors.
I’m just outside a major metropolitan area. Group-ex instructors in my area who are employees get paid between $16 an hour and $35 per hour. Independent contractors paid hourly get more because they pay both employee and employer payroll taxes. Independent contractors could also pay you for rent and then charge their own prices for classes; that secures your rent income and the instructor bears the risk / reward for attendance. Independent contractors can also be paid by the head, i.e. one place pays me $5 per attendee.
Hi Danny,
I teach classes as an independent contractor at a studio and get paid per person. Since the studio has all kinds of packages, I get paid 60% of what the student pays. Of course, as an independent contractor, I carry my own liability insurance and anything else required for my business. It’s not a big deal for me, since I have my own studio and have to have it anyway but it will be something to watch out for if you want to go that route.

Danny it really depends on where and what kind of class you are starting. I personally started my own Bootcamp at my local park. I contacted the county parks and was given the go ahead to use the park space at no cost (no overhead). I currently reside about 20 mins south of Atlanta. In the first year attendance was a struggle and averaged about $12 per hour. As I continued marketing and providing perks and bring a friend deals within 2 years we grew substantially. I am currently in my 3rd year of our BootCamp and average about 40 participants per class. My average hourly has gone up to around $83 per hour. Like with anything in this field the time and effort will reap rewards.
