I that the split squat is a good, advanced exercise for strengthening the knee and hip extensors, advanced being the key word. Good balance and quad and glut strength is essential to perform this exercise with minimal risk and maximal benefit.

Take care.

I usually try to keep clients from using this exercise. It throws in balance and weight, and can put too much stress in someones meniscus.

Hi Susan, I just want to make sure that we are talking about the same exercise cause you can also do regular split squats using an 8lb medicine ball (over your head) and just stand in the same position without using the bench. With the Bulgarian split squat you have one leg “elevated” up behind you on a bench or step which is where the balance issue comes in and it is best to use the barbell when doing this exercise to help with the balance issue, as opposed to doing a regular split squat that you would use the medicine ball with.

Ok yes I know what they are, I guess the fancy name threw me.

I do them with seasoned exercisers, I think that balance can be an issue for some and knee, ankle placement is very important, not everyone can get that.

I use them in my bootcamps usually while holding an 8 lb medicine ball.

Hey Dorine. I have been doing these with my Jungle Gym XT attatched to the bar. My ankle has been fractured for a couple of months now and can only support a small amount of weight so I only use that leg if the the bar reaches the safety arm on my rack, otherwise its just barely touching the ground. If you have some straps (TRX or whatever), you should try it. Feels kinda like a free moving power rack but without the lateral stability. Can’t wait till I can switch out legs, I think this could be a great exercise to build my injured leg back up… but not until I get some ankle strength.
