How many of you Fitness Professionals hire someone to do your marketing?
When I started out, I did all my own marketing. I spent hours at the computer creating flyers, ads, website content, etc. It was valuable in terms of learning what worked and what didn’t, and how much time was needed to spend working “on” the business rather than just “in” the business. As my schedule filled up, I realized not only was my time valuable, but I needed people who had greater expertise to do my marketing. So “Is it worth the money?” I feel that it is. You may not always strike gold with the person you hire. But your time is valuable. And when you get the right person, it can truly boost your business to the next level.
The first things that I learn about entering the fitness industry and any other occupations is to network with other professionals and research. I never paid anyone to market for my business and I never will in the future. There is so much free information out there and inexpensive courses (community college and college extensions).
Hi Christine,
My wife (and business partner) is great in marketing and networking so she helped a lot when it came down to that part of the business. But I would recommend hiring a marketing person to do the marketing and the PR if you are not very good at it, because it’s a very important element when owning a business and working for yourself. If you can’t do the marketing, then the business will suffer. I have known many trainers who were great as far as training went, but because they couldn’t promote themselves they were unsuccessful. I believe that in order to be successful, we must know how to utilize our strengths and learn from our weaknesses.
Best,
Harris
