Depends on the meal, but in general its 45 min to 90 min. You will have to see what you can handle. I typically eat a greek yogurt an hour before I work out.

I agree with Shawn, it depends on what you’re eating. If you’re in a long endurance event (mara, tri) you’d better eat some readily available replenishment for glycogen reserves during the event! It also depends on how vigorous your workout will be.

When you eat, blood is drawn to the gut to help facilitate absorption and assimilation. When you do large muscle, rhythmic exercise like cycling, running, swimming, aerobics, obviously the blood flow increases to the exercising muscles to increase oxygen delivery. So, it depends a lot on intensity and duration.

Ask five different world class athletes and you’ll get five different answers to your question.

Take care.

If the meal was pretty filling then wait at least 30 minutes but I’ve been seen eating something small like granola or apple while walking across the parking lot to the gym.

This depends on your digestive system. Most of my clients have a banana one hour before they start working out. But I’ve had some clients digestive systems completely reject the banana idea. But try to have a light, small, healthy snack at least one hour before you start to allow for digestion.

Hello Gustavo,
I would agree with Shawn, depending on the type of food and the amount would greatly have an effect on your workout (depending on the type/intesity of workout too).

Sincerely,
Michael
