I am so torn between getting the ISSA cert. and the NASM cert…. I know NASM is more well-known and accepted, however, I really like the idea that ISSA will give you a website. Am I understanding that correctly? How does that work (and how well) and does NASM or any other certs give you a benefit like that?
by now you may have already decided but I still want to weight in. I am certified with both. What I like best about NASM is that all their specialty certifications form a coherent unit with their personal trainer certification and are based on the OPT model.
On the other hand, in favor of ISSA, they are the only certification that ever sent me a lead for a job opportunity.
I hold certifications with both NASM and ISSA. I looked into getting one of the free websites ISSA offers but they weren’t very appealing. I ended up purchasing a website on my own because it looks so much more professional. Like Martin mentioned, it’s probably not a good idea to base you decision on the website. I would definitely recommend NASM if you are looking to work for a gym. If you are going into business for yourself, ISSA is a good choice because they also include help in business development as part of their course. They are both good certs, but it depends on what direction you are planning on taking once certified.
Personally, I would not make my choice on the providing of a website. I have not had any involvement with anyone holding an ISSA cert. So, I can’t speak to their programs. I have worked with a number of NASM instructors, NSCA instructors, ACE and ACSM instructors. I have not found any one cert to be superior. The cert does not make the instructor. Character, professionalism, honor, thirst for knowledge, humanity, etc. these things cannot be taught. These things must be lived.
Whatever you decide, I recommend immersing yourself in the profession. Study, learn, and grow in as many areas as you can.
I know you are in the decision making process, and I just wanted to throw out one more additional comment (although not on the website front). NASM is NCCA accredited and holds a higher standard in the fitness industry. It is well respected and nationally recognized. I hold ACE certifications, but would also do NASM just because they are so highly regarded in the industry. Just my 2 cents for what it is worth… 🙂
You can do your research on the two and make your decision based on cost, recognition, standards, etc… You will choose the one that is right for you.
Best wishes to you on your decision and endeavor!
The biggest differences are that the exam is not third party proctored for ISSA, and ISSA is not NCCA accredited. You might want to double check with the places you wish to work if you decide to go the ISSA route. Some places require or prefer a cert. that is NCCA accredited.
Easter is right. You need to compare the costs of doing a web site, and the hidden costs of the web site for ISSA…. yearly membership, and what other benefits you get from that membership, what happens to the web site if you let your cert lapse, how long does the cert last, and how much does it cost to renew.
The trainers I know whom I most respect have pretty much all had ACE or ACSM or NASM, but that is a small sample size.
