I’ve been a successful personal strength trainer for many years and would like a certification.
Hi Thomas. By now, I’m sure that you’ve gathered from the responses to your question, that there are all types of certifications out there, each with their own prerequisites and time frames for sitting for their certification exam. As others have alluded to, rather than ‘how fast can I get the certification’ I would give more attention to the quality of the certification. Like most everything else in our society, speed often does not equate to ‘best’ so I would temper my desire to get the quickest certification with ‘what certification will suit my needs best, and position me to where I want to be in this industry.” Just something to consider.
I hope that this helps.
I feel it would come down to how fast you can go over material that is given to you by each certification. Most certifications will require a book as their source and other training manuals that will help. If you are not so good at self study, you may want to look for a reputable certification that has classes. Cooper and a few others do the classes. You can get it done in a couple of months if you apply yourself pretty well.
When I was looking at certifications I saw a slew of different options online. I went to the gym and then had a conversation with them and chose the ISSA. While I would not say this is the fastest method I will say it is a recognized certification accepted by such large gyms like Golds, L.A. Fitness etc. I will also say it is very thorough.
There are certifications available where you take a 140 question multiple choice exam online which seems like the fastest way. The ISSA exam is 100 plus multiple choice questions, then there’s at least 20 true and false, approximately another 10 matching, then you have to write 6 essays, and then there is the practical questions section. This section has you calculate out caloric diets, calculate BMR’s, write a nutritional/supplemental programs. Then there are two scenarios where you have to write a training program in detail. So this would not be the fastest way but rest assured you will not pass this exam unless you truly have the necessary knowledge it requires to be a personal trainer.
I am so much inspired by the Otsimo School. Zafer mentioned that he made an app and all the information he put on it. I also learned from the Otsimo School. I think they are doing good work and write Corporate Social Responsibility examples for new students in Cambridge University. Thanks for spreading this kind of knowledge. Keep it up!
