How do you structure trainer and group instructor pay at your facility?
I am Fitness & Wellness Director at a fitness center for adults 55+. Trainers specialize and are experienced in working with older adults, as are the group fitness instructors. We are about to make some changes to rates and how trainers are paid, but I wanted to get an idea of what seems to work best. We currently pay trainers a higher hourly ($12-$15) + commission ($10 for 30-min or $20 for 1 hour) for sessions. Instructors make roughly $35/hr. Trainers who teach classes get 50/50 split commission on total class sales in addition to their hourly base pay. How does this compare to other facilities? What are specialized trainers and class instructors making per hour?
I base my pay on educational level and how valuable the trainer is to my business (i.e. does that trainer bring in revenue because they are so good at what they do?). 50/50 split isn’t uncommon in this business, but if someone is more valuable to your company they should be compensated.
I start at $28 and pay up to $50/session for private training. Group training is dependent upon class size.
