All great answers. Have your client go workout with you. Take him/her for a run, for a cycle, for a strength workout in the gym. Show your client that you practice what you preach. If he/she “wins” so be it. I suspect it will only motivate him/her to work harder, and you!

Take care.

I motivate by connecting with my clients. Building trust and rapport is so important. I praise realistically. And I always and sincerely let them know that I look forward to the time we spend in the gym or where ever we meet.

After edifying all of there actions and positive efforts, if this does not change their motivation, I help them refocus their goals from calculated measurements of girth and weight to effort driven goals. When clients think of goal setting in regards to fitness, most focus on results that if impatient, will discourage their efforts. This goal setting strategy allows the client to back off of the constant urge to see physical results, and to patiently refocus on continuous effort and positive habit creation that produce constant small achievements. I always find that motivating the client to focus on effort driven goals, such as, frequency of training (ex. 60 mins for 3 times per week), dieting habits, sleep schedule, etc. allows them to realize fitness as a lifestyle and not just a quick fix.

I start by telling them that we have the power to be either our own worst critic, or our most effective cheerleader. I tell them to listen to the song by Paula Cole “Me” a very powerful message.

I tell them they can do anything they want to do, that nothing is impossible

Sometimes I have them repeat things they say to me with a positive tone attached to it, I will ask them to say thier goals out loud to me

I always remind them that they have to want it in order to get it.

Challenging clients keep me on my toes, however, they are only challenging if we allow them to be.
