As for any competition, training needs to include the use of similar movements and muscle groups. Some trainng can be movement specific and some muscle specific. For an event like a “mudder”, it would really be helpful to find a way to duplicate conditions and challenges. You can look to see if there are outdoor facilities in your area that specialize in this type of training or find places that recreate the conditions yourself. But be very careful in seeking out outdoor sites. Unsupervised outdoor activity is oftne dangerous. Never do such training without a partner or group. Always be sure that you can contact emergancy assistance should it be necessary. Safety first.

This was asked a long time ago but I wanted to add something here. I did a zombie mud run two years ago and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had! (Being chased by zombies, covered in mud, and climbing rope ladders I must be a glutton for punishment!) Anyway I trained by taking my kids to the playground, not kidding. We would play games of tag (prepping me for the zombie part), I would climb on everything (rope ladder, check!), and I would practice jumping fences (had to jump a wall in the race), it kept my kids busy and plus on race day I was far more prepared then I thought I was! Be creative, get outside, run, jump, climb etc on everyday objects or playground equipment. It worked for me!

Hello Riley Stone,

Also, eat some mud, then eat some more, then do your workout covered in mud. When you are done with that, roll in some freezing cold mud.
Haha, just kidding; although, this is not too far from the truth.
You will want to be the strongest and most flexible possible. I would do cross training to build up the cardiovascular system, and weights for endurance strength.
Most of all, have fun.
Take care,
Natalie.

Also, keep in mind that you probably can’t do the EXACT obstacles that will be in ToughMudder in your training, so i’d say focus also on the mental side e.g. visualising different things as you’re training, and try to anticipate (like Susan mentioned) as much as possible. I’m planning to do ToughMudder here in Australia in October too by the way 🙂

Hi Riley:
Check local gyms close to the race venue as many of the Mud Runs partner with local gyms for training. We are in Boca Raton Florida and we have partnered with GoRuck, SuperHero Scramble and others to promote their events with race specific training – sometimes mirroring the course.
Hope this helps
Mark
