How do I charge my client who wants me to travel with him and train him on international business trips?
I have a client I have trained for almost 2 years who travels every 8-10 weeks internationally for 2-3 weeks at a time. I have been providing him travel programs, but he has expressed interest in having me travel with him to train him in person on these trips. I am at a loss in how I would charge for this, he would be paying for my flight, but I am also giving up sessions with other clients during this time. Does anyone have a similar situation, and how do you charge?
You have received excellent and detailed advice. My addition would be – what about Skype? That way, at least you could connect on a real-time level, without the inconvenience of having to travel. If you have to get up in the middle of the night to do it, charge a little more.
Now, this is the other half of my brain thinking, because I LOVE international travel. If where this gentleman goes is a country that’s interesting to me, and I felt very safe about the proposal vs. proposition issue, I might entertain the idea once or twice a year. I’ve done a fitness gig in the Dominican Republic where I got to see the country in exchange for teaching a yoga and a Zumba class once per day. There were pros and cons to it, but I wouldn’t completely rule out doing it again.
Do you have other vacations planned during the year? What do your clients do during that time? Because your point about missing out on revenue from your other clients is totally valid. If you really want to go, and you’re willing to skip another vacation to do this as a working vacation, it could work out well and you could see a country you might not otherwise be able to see, and make money while doing it. If you don’t really want to go, and you feel it would jeopardize your client base, then absolutely don’t go.
