How do I charge my client who wants me to travel with him and train him on international business trips?
I have a client I have trained for almost 2 years who travels every 8-10 weeks internationally for 2-3 weeks at a time. I have been providing him travel programs, but he has expressed interest in having me travel with him to train him in person on these trips. I am at a loss in how I would charge for this, he would be paying for my flight, but I am also giving up sessions with other clients during this time. Does anyone have a similar situation, and how do you charge?
Hi Christine,
I would give this very careful consideration.
The first thing that I was wondering was whether your role would truly be only that of a personal trainer. You have known this client for 2 years but this travel arrangement would get you into much closer proximity for extended periods of time.
Let’s assume that this is a proposal and not a proposition.
How would your other clients feel when you are leaving them every 8-10 weeks for 2-3 weeks. Would you be at risk of losing them? You may end up being in a very dependent position towards that one client.
You are also giving up your private life. You are not on vacation but you will have an awful lot of downtime in locations that may be quite boring.
If you still think that is a great idea, I would expect that all travel expenses be paid (including a lump sum allowance for meals), the amount for the sessions you would have with your other clients (plus his) and a daily charge for the fact that you are giving up your life for his whim. How much that would be depends on whether you really want to do this or not. I personally would quote an amount that would dissuade him but you may feel differently.
