How did you decide which area of fitness was the best for you?
Hello all!
I recently passed my CPT exam and I am both excited and overwhelmed by options out there for someone just getting into the field. I got lucky because at my current job I work with people in a pool giving them workouts to improve balance, strength, and overall health. However, as much as I love my job in the future (I am calling it my five year plan) I hope to maybe open my own studio and offer classes etc. that way. I also have an addiction to trying to learn and be certified in various areas. I guess my big question is how did you decide which area you wanted to work in and how did you go about getting there? I currently feel pretty lucky knowing both an owner of a small gym and an owner of a studio in my area and I feel like I should get in with them. (It’s about who you know right?) What can I do to eventually work my way into both someone who is full of expertise in the field but also someone who runs a successful buiness?
(I should mention I am currently eight months pregnant and probably the only person who recieved their certification while six months pregnant. Not being able to just hop right in there right now is driving me crazy!!)
WOW! That two years has flown by! Actually I am still working in the pool. I did however, get certified as a Health Coach too. I also took up mobile training. Although that is just getting off the ground.
I have decided that my niche is really to work with women especially overweight women, or moms who want to feel strong and empowered again. I feel like fitness changed that for me and I want to do that for others.
Now it’s about finding a good name and getting started! LOL.
I have a focus for my work with clients in Corrective Exercise and neurological diseases/disorders, but I also love to work with competitive athletes. I also continue to study in my focus areas, but also in anything that interests me. I have always found a lot of crossover in what I teach to both clients with medical issues and clients who are collegiate or professional athletes. As well as crossover for different training methods and popular exercise trends.
My advice would be to follow your interests. Make a living doing work in an area that you are passionate about if you can. You might need to do other things to make a living, but you can still stay involved in something you are passionate about as well. I have relocated a few times and I always stayed with my passion of fitness instruction even if I had to find another job to make ends meet. It has all been a great adventure. I have lived in Ohio, Florida, the Bahamas, Hawaii, and Colorado. I did some strange jobs along the way, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Well, I would take out a couple of nasty falls and injuries, but the rest was great journey. Now I am back in Hawaii and I plan to make this my last stop. But I don’t plan on ever stopping helping others and learning all that I can.
