How can I start my group exercise/personal training business in my home?
I totally agree with Susan and Harris.
1. You can click onto IDEA’s Career Guide and under insurance liability and confirm you hold adequate coverage.
2. Decide how you want to run your business, a DBA, sole proprietor, corporation or LLC; here’s where an attorney can help (get a quote for a one time consultation first and go in asking lots of questions, be prepared!)
3. City Hall would be the place to check for permits and licenses, which ones you need, how much do they cost?
4. Then do a side by side spreadsheet with all your initial costs against potential revenues, i.e., how many clients will you train daily, what will you charge per session, how long will it take you to make back your initial investment?
Then go for it!! Good luck!
If you live in a housing development, you’ll also want to check with their by-laws to see if a home business is allowed, as well as the points that Susan and Clarita covered.
Parking may also be a concern and street side parking may or may not be allowed, so you’ll need to check on that and if your home or business liability would cover parking issues.
Since you’ll be operating a class out of your house, you’ll want to check your home owners policy and see what will be covered. Speak to an agent as some insurance companies raise premiums for businesses run out of the home where people will be coming and going.
You’ll also need to think through how they’ll come and go in your home, access to a bathroom, place to change, personal theft or information issues.
None of these things are to scare you out of doing it, but just to let you know of things you’ll want to consider that may not be run of the mill.
Good luck!
