This just popped back up in my feed. I’m glad to hear that you went into teaching after you asked your question. Congrats and much continued success to you. I teach some choreographed formats and some more basic circuit-style workouts. What has worked the best with me is to engage my class and help them feel safe and welcome.
As with anything that you want to teach others, you should become very good at it yourself first. Teaching exercise to music requires being able to do the exercise to music first. Then you find what type of cueing works best for you and clients. Break the exercise into it’s base parts and learn how to verbally instruct as well as visually instruct the parts as necessary. And a lot can be learned as you teach. What was effective? What was a flop?
I hope you have done well and this has been a success for you.
Yes, I have been teaching for 5 years and I did exactly what the person before you suggested. I am not the greatest at choreography as I am not a dancer but I teach my own style and have had great success. I’d say my style is more like Jessica Smith than Petra Kolber or other great choreographers.
Thanks for asking!
