Have you ever fired a client, and why?

I never had to, but sometimes you may have to. Example if the client is constantly late, refuses to do what you ask during sessions, or they are constantly rude.

Fired may be too strong a word but I had a situation when a client got behind (and behinder) in payments. (I have to explain that it is my practice to bill my clients monthly for the sessions they had; this has worked very well for me over the years.) She made small partial payments but continued to schedule sessions.

Before things got out of hand, I had to suggest to her that we suspend training until she was caught up with her financial obligations.

As it turns out, she eventually paid the entire amount she owed even though I had – in my mind – written it off.

I had a client who told me she was fasting in an effort to lose weight. Even after my explanation that fasting may create the opposite effect of her weight loss goal, she continued. During our training session, she complained she felt dizzy, so I stopped the session. Since she paid in advance for the next session, I told her we would continue if she would not fast the day of our session. I arrived and she told me she hadn’t eaten that day, so I refused to train her, refunded her money and asked her to seek medical advice for her extreme diet. There is more to this story, but I’m keeping it brief for a direct answer.

I would never consider it “firing” a client. I look at it rather as them giving up on themselves.
