For the personal trainers who do in house training, do you have a business license?

Hi Denise,

I also had an LLC when I was in Chicago and I agree with the above statements. You do need a business license in Chicago, but not necessary if you are operating under your legal name. I was fortunate enough to have a great lawyer who helped us with all of the legal aspects of owning a business.

Best,
Harris

Hi Denise,

I run a small business in Hawaii where I travel to clients homes to train them through yoga, pilates, and personal training. When I decided to open my business I went to the Business Action Center. They helped me with all the paperwork I needed. I filed a LLC, General Excise Tax ID number, and a Federal ID number with the IRS. You can find out a lot about your states requirements online, although it was very helpful for me to go into an office and work with someone who knew exactly what I needed and how to complete the forms correctly. The Business Action Center’s services were free. They also had a attorney come in once a week that was available to answer any legal questions I might have had. The process can seem overwhelming at first, but it is a great learning experience of everything that goes into building a business from the ground up. Wish you the best.

In good health,
Vanessa

I operate a mobile wellness firm within the DC, Maryland, VA Tri-State area using only my registered business name and DBA (Doing Business As) names – registered to my headquarters (my home). In most states you do need to be a registered business and have Liability insurance for your company, equipment and employees. As everyone has already mentioned though the requirements are different for every locale.

The small business bureau can also be a great resource on what is necessary to get a business started where you live. In some states you not only have to register your business, but also the name of your business (2 different forms, 2 different processes) if it is different from your name.
