Hi Denise. To answer this question it is best to check with the town or city that you live in. Whether a business license is required, and what type of license is required, is location specific. Each town, city, county has something like a “Business License” agency as part of their city government, so give them a call.
I hope that this helps.
In order to know if you need a business license or not, you need to talk to your tax person I believe. Obtaining a business license is for tax reasons and in some states, if you do business under your legal name, you won’t need a business license. Like I said, the best way to find out if you need one or not is to see the person who helps you with your taxes. Good luck!
I operate a mobile wellness firm within the DC, Maryland, VA Tri-State area using only my registered business name and DBA (Doing Business As) names – registered to my headquarters (my home). In most states you do need to be a registered business and have Liability insurance for your company, equipment and employees. As everyone has already mentioned though the requirements are different for every locale.
