For prenatal/postpartum group instructors what are some of the benefits that clients cite beyond the physical?
I’ve had clients tell me that as a result of training both pre/post-natal they feel physically and mentally stronger.
Their stress level is reduced as they know that what they’re doing is helping themselves and the baby.
They also need a safe place to vent about the struggles and frustrations that can come with being a mom. In a group class they get that from the other participants and from the instructor. At least one person in the class, in no one other than myself, has been through the childbirth (c-section and labor) and parenting before and can offer some levity to what they’re going through. Being pregnant and then the parenting of a little one can be a lonely experience at times.
The classes also offer some of my participants an opportunity to get up, get dressed and get out the door. Sometimes that’s a big enough feat in itself for a new mom! And when the group greets returning members, their faces light up.
I like to provide an opportunity for the moms to chat afterward without feeling like they’ve been rushed out the door. I’ll also offer to have them join me for a walk on the another day at times in the spring or fall. Little ones can be in a stroller or carrier. Getting outside in nature is a natural energy boost! A workout at the park is also another big attendance booster! And they can chat on the walks while they’re working out.
