For prenatal/postpartum group instructors what are some of the benefits that clients cite beyond the physical?
All of these are proven benefits for Pregnant Moms:
Increased physical health scores
Increased Intelligence Scores
Fewer Fetal Medical Interventions during labor
Fewer Fetal-Affected Complications
Increased Nutrient Exchange & Toxin Removal
A significant decrease in time spent in labor
A significant decrease in need for pain relief during labor
A significant decrease in need to artificially rupture membranes for labor
A significant decrease in need to induce or stimulate labor
A significant decrease in need to intervene because of abnormalities in fetal heart rate
A significant decrease in need for episiotomy (the surgical cut of the vagina)
A significant decrease in exhaustion during labor
A significant decrease in the need for operative interventions like C-section
Reduced likelihood of macrosomia (excessive birth-weight baby)
Fewer pregnancy discomforts
Less weight gain
Reduced likelihood of debilitating pregnancy illness like Gestational Diabetes and Preeclampsia
I am a mother of two and trained throughout both pregnancies until I went into labor. I felt amazing. I had no aches or pains, no common pregnancy symptoms, natural births and only gained 20lbs.
I exclusively train pre and post natal women including group classes and the women feel a sense of belonging, a place to gossip, a place to discuss their pregnancy, the type of birth they want, who their doctor or midwife is, if others are feeling these sorts of things…
hope this is helpful

I agree with Jocelyn that one of the primary benefits cited is the stress relief/mental relaxation that the mothers get from the physical exertion. To me, and to the women that I’ve worked with, this benefit is HUGE!

I’ve had clients tell me that as a result of training both pre/post-natal they feel physically and mentally stronger.
Their stress level is reduced as they know that what they’re doing is helping themselves and the baby.
They also need a safe place to vent about the struggles and frustrations that can come with being a mom. In a group class they get that from the other participants and from the instructor. At least one person in the class, in no one other than myself, has been through the childbirth (c-section and labor) and parenting before and can offer some levity to what they’re going through. Being pregnant and then the parenting of a little one can be a lonely experience at times.
The classes also offer some of my participants an opportunity to get up, get dressed and get out the door. Sometimes that’s a big enough feat in itself for a new mom! And when the group greets returning members, their faces light up.
I like to provide an opportunity for the moms to chat afterward without feeling like they’ve been rushed out the door. I’ll also offer to have them join me for a walk on the another day at times in the spring or fall. Little ones can be in a stroller or carrier. Getting outside in nature is a natural energy boost! A workout at the park is also another big attendance booster! And they can chat on the walks while they’re working out.
I have had a few clients in the past both pre and post natal, and I’ve heard people say everything from fewer symptoms of pregnancy (less sickness, less swelling, less fatigue) to an easier / shorter delivery. As Joanne points out, it is very important to stay healthy and fit throughout pregnancy, as post partum isn’t a piece of cake. Doing a lot of posture work has been helpful, as post partum, there’s a baby to hold, along with the diaper bag and all the other toys, strollers, and other supplies necessary!
In a class setting, pregnant women (especially if it’s a class with other pregnant women) can also experience positive effects on their mental and emotional state. Having people to share with is important, as their significant others and friends may not be able to relate, and having people unrelated to ask advice from can also be very beneficial and comforting. Keep in mind that a mixed class, with very young or fit individuals could have a negative impact if there is any self-consciousness with the pregnancy.
There are no two pregnancies alike, so reminding the woman to listen to her own body is key!
Childbirth requires physical strength.
Parenting requires physical strength.
She will need the energy and strength pre and post natal.
Hope this helps.
