I can find resources on cardio recommendations, but little on strength training for post bariatric surgery. I have been working with pre and post bariatric surgery patients for 10 years and most information just says to have them exercise or focus on cardio. In my experience in working with these patients and in tracking body composition, I find dramatic lean body mass loss in those who do not strength train. Just want to know why there is not more of an emphasis on strength training for them.
Hello Helen Caton,
You want to wait until the client is fully healed and cleared for strength training. Then start from the beginning with strength work and slowly progress as you would with anyone else.
Most people look at the number on the scale instead of the whole picture comparing lean and fat mass. That is probably the reason for not seeing more strength training recommendations.
As always, we also need to work with the client’s wishes and goals.
