exercise for calf, after ankle fusion surgery
Hello Bill Stark,
It is great that you care for your health.
In this case, a physical therapist will be able to guide you through the safest ways to regain proper form, stability, mobility and strength.
Please do not let the concern of losing calf muscle size worry you; because recuperation is important and your calf muscle should catch up quickly enough.
Good luck to you.
Take care.
I’d be concerned, too! But I’d also be concerned about the safest, most effective ways of managing my ankle post-surgery.
Have you already had the surgery?
-If so, did your doctors not recommend physical therapy?
-If not, are you able to do any “pre-hab” for your ankle? (AKA exercises/movements that will hopefully help set you up for an easier time with your re-hab after the surgery)
Its great to think about your recovery. If you haven’t already had the surgery, that’s a great question to ask your physician, orthopedist, podiatrist, etc. They will usually have an aftercare plan for you to follow and can recommend many more exercises than we could that are specific to you, your surgery and your case. They should also have a rehabilitation plan that you will follow to maintain your current fitness level that will include a specific amount of work with a physical therapist or exercise physiologist.
These are great questions to ask! And I commend you for thinking about this prior to your surgery! I hope it all works out well for you,
Jocelyn
There are a couple of questions that need to be answered first. Is there any mobility at all left at the ankle? Why did the client need this surgery? Has there been physical therapy? What were the results of any therapy? Is there pain in the ankle? Are other joints being affected and if so, how?
I know this question was asked a long time ago. If you are still getting emails on this question, get back to us on how things are going. And let us know about your experience with this and what worked/didn’t work, etc.
