I was certified about a year ago and, due to my family/personal situation, was not able to pursue seeing clients until now. I continued to teach some group fitness classes, keep up on professional reading, take some courses here and there… I’m interested in finding out if there are ways to sort of brush up on some basic CPT skills.

If you want to brush up on correcting form and kinetic chain checkpoints, view, watch and comment on any number of videos posted on facebook, snapchat or instagram pages. For exercise modalities and programs as well as nutrition, keep reading online. If you want to focus on program design, go back to and refer back to the book and imagine various clients you might encounter and practice designing programs to the point where you can easily do them on the fly; or workouts for that matter. Study anatomy and physiology and practice on yourself which exercises will affect certain, specific muscles. But yes, Lisa Clyne has one of the best solutions in that you try working pro bono with some friends to practice your skills and knowledge application.
The best way to learn about personal training is to get some experience with live clients. See if you can shadow someone, or start paying closer attention in your group-ex classes to see how bodies move.
I got an excellent DVD set from OPTP about body reading to help refine my visual assessment skills. Even though I’m an experienced trainer, learning how to see from someone else’s eyes has been useful.
