I love taking other instructor’s classes. When I was first working in fitness I did it a lot. These days, as I work part time, and am always struggling for enough time to teach, do what is needed for my family, prep for teaching, and maintain my own meditative and physical practices I don’t always make it to as many classes as I would like.
I agree with you it is really important, but I also agree with Karin that managing to do all the things that are important and helpful is really tough. It is kind of a balancing act.
What I find myself doing is targeting studios and teachers that I have heard good things about, or whose work I admire, and making time for the formats I feel I will most benefit from. For example, I just certified for group cycle, and I try to take a couple of classes each week, as well as work on my own. I don’t get to as many yoga classes as I would like, but I try to take a 3 or 5 day intensive workshop once a year or so, and to get to as many other classes as possible.
There is also the issue that if the studio is small, or classes are not membership based, but paid for per head, one needs to be mindful to make space first for other teachers, and be understanding if the studio requires one to pay.
Some places I work allow you to take as many classes for free as you want, and others charge you for the space. While I choose based on what works for time, I know the cost can be an issue sometimes, so I always appreciate an invitation to be in class if there is extra space.
