Do you second guess yourself as a trainer?
Hello all! The other day I had what I feel is an awesome idea for a group class. Although I have been training for two years I sometimes have really good ideas but never make them into reality because I start second guessing myself. Does this happen to the rest of you? How do you just get out there and do it without overthinking everything?
I teach instructor prep courses. There is one concept taught to these students that applies here. You should never have clients perform exercises that you have not evaluated personally. That means the instructor needs to do the exercises, consider the potential benefits and risks, determine if the client will be able to do the exercises, and determine if there is a good reason for the client to do the exercises or if there are better exercises to accomplish the desired result. Then the instructor needs to design a program for introducing and progressing/regressing the exercsie appropriately.
If you are going to create a class, you would use the same system. Test out all exercises you want to do in the class. Then test the ones that you have chosen as appropriate in the class format. Then consider your potential clients and figure out how to teach the class to them. Once you feel you can safely teach the exercises, begin to test them in a class environment. Be very cautious and monitor the clients for any reason to stop and adjust/eliminate exercises as necessary.
