Hello Susan House,
I appreciate your wish to remain professional regarding noise levels.
Here are two links with safety regulations for you to read:
Natalie aka NAPS 2 B Fit.
Another thought is that depending on where your speakers are aimed, there will be locations in your room that are more and less noisy. Measure the decibels in several places in your room. Guide the participants who are more sensitive to noise in to the quieter areas of the room, and consider having the loudest location of the room conform to the 85db standard.
Well, I am concerned about the instructors and the customers. I don’t want long term injury for the instructors (several classes a day, several times a week), and I want to make sure that we have the correct latest and greatest standards- ACSM has a higher standard then the 85dB I believe. So in researching this, I am getting several different “norms” or standards. I did see a number in a NETA book but now can’t find what they stated. I could probably do a journal article on this by the time I am done researching! (smile)
