Hello everyone! So I have a job interview at the gym Friday. While I was on the phone with the head trainer he told me to basically come dressed to workout just in case I have to show them some moves. I am not used to going dressed in gym clothes to an interview so what would you suggest I wear?
Also..I know some gyms have you show them a workout. I have been a trainer for a few years but I am freaking out a bit (an audience watching!) does anyone know what they have you show them? Any suggestions on how I could prepare? Or have any of you had to do this? What did have to do?
Any suggestions/comments will help!
Hello Missy Reece,
Congratulations and good luck.
I wear workout gear under my interview clothes. An exercise routine on a wrist index card holder houses my notes for the nervous factor, which eases, knowing I have the reminder with me. An abridged WU, session and CD with progressions and regressions will show that you are the capable professional for the job.
Imagine you are training your “audience” and get them involved as if you are already hired and teaching a class.

Go in to the interview with confidence and a smile, you know your stuff. I would wear a nice workout out top with black workout pants (I usually wear long ones, but that’s me), and a nice, fitted zip up jacket on top of that (no hoodies and fitted jacket, not loose). That’s my go-to for many different occasions, and it looks very professional.
Just remember, if they ask you to do some moves, great–keep progressions and regressions in mind, and be confident and professional. It’s not all about the moves, it’s also about how you will interact with clients, so that is something to consider.
Know your strong points, and you will do great!
Best of luck to you,
This is very common in Personal Trainer or Fitness instructor job interview. If they told you to dress this way then you have nothing to worry about. Just dress appropriately (just like if you were going to train a client) and once the time comes for you to do or show them a workout you will be prepared. In most of these type of interviews they just want to see how you interact in the gym (maybe talk to members) or if you know how to instruct someone to execute an exercise the correct way and who well you can connect with clients and/or members. Don’t be nervous, just think of it as just another day at the gym :-)! Good luck to you!
modern workout attire can easily be interview-appropriate and still workout-ready. I often wear yoga pants with tops that can easily go lunch, interview and workout. Use that one you feel most confident in. We all have favorites that make us feel good. And don’t fret. You have been doing this long enough to hold up to any scrutiny.
