I’ve finally decided to combine my masters degree in counseling with me passion for health and fitness. I have no idea which certificates would be best for me to get and in what order. I am not licensed as a professional therapist (need to complete my post-ggraduate supervision work) so I am also unsure of if it would be beneficial to focus more on a coaching relationship with clients and how much psychotherapy would actually be done.
Does anyone have experience with this or know someone that does that would be willing to chat with me?
While this may not be exactly what you want it is in the same direction and has been around for quite a while:
Hi Sabrina. I agree with the others that the combination of counseling and training is a great combination. Honestly, most of us as trainers do a bit of ‘counseling’ or at least active listening with our clients as our relationship with them expands and they feel comfortable talking with us about ‘other lifestyle issues’ affecting their health and wellness. I would only caution that since, as you’ve said, you’re not a licensed psychotherapy professional yet, that you make it clear to your clients that you are NOT offering psychotherapy services. Very important from a legal and professional point of view!
I hope that this helps.
