Does anyone know who is the overarching organization that decides if a company has a valid certification based on best practice principles? Is it ACSM? There are some certifications that people get now-a-days that don’t even require a basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology or…well….sometimes all you need is a checkbook and poof! like magic you are certified to teach! This is oftentimes an insult to our industry in my opinion.
Hi Kim. Part of the problem in our industry, and one of the reasons that many States are starting to look at licensing personal trainers is that there is no one “overarching organization” that decides the VALIDITY of certifications. There are organizations that certify or approve certification programs and agencies, but to my knowledge, at least as of now, there’s not a single agency that decides a programs VALIDITY.
This however is definitely the wave of the future in our industry, and in my opinion, several States are initiating legislative bills just for that reason.
