I have a client who fell off a horse when young, doesn’t believe she fractured anything but might have done ligament and/or other soft tissue damage. She can’t remember. However, she can’t use the leg press machine or the standing full elliptical machine, as her hips hurt a day later. What exercises would you suggest I avoid or include in her program design?
I agree with Karin here. Your client needs to know exactly what she did to her hip, even though it may have been years ago. She probably has underlying scar tissue, and avoiding the issue may further progress the injury or cause additional muscle imbalance due to compensation of other areas.
She may need physical therapy, but it will be worth knowing the issue at hand.
(I have a client who had a shoulder injury many years ago–and she never saw a doctor for it. She had not disclosed it to me, and it started flaring up as we trained. I had her see an orthopedic dr., who referred her to physical therapy. Today she is much better, and I have progressed her training. But, I would not have been able to progress her at all if she did not go in…)
