I designed a Youth Cross Training Fitness program at Westwood Health and Fitness in Wisconsin. It is a very touchy subject when dealing with children and their weight. Children between 10 – 13 are probably the most challenging because their bodies, hormones, and minds are all conflicting with one another.
My experience taught me foremost show them the benefits of being physical…rather than teaching them anything with much specificity. I learned to unleash their natural inclination to want to have fun by creating a curriculum with games where there is an end goal they can strive for. I prefer having the kids create a goal, write it down (document it so it becomes tangible), and then urge them to surpass their goal.
I shied away from having them compete with one another at that age. Their bodies are so different.
Keep it fun! Be a great role model for them!
