Anyone teach group fitness and do personal training?
I know a lot of instructors that do personal training too. My question is if you do both do you find that it’s worth the cost? I know you have to pay the renewal fees for both as well as get CEC’s for both. Can the same CEC’s count towards both group for and personal training? Thoughts about the cost of doing both?
Hi Christy,
Do you want to do both? I do both personal training and teach group fitness classes and love them both. Yes, you do have to renew both certifications. My own personal training and group fitness are with two different agencies (ACE and AFAA), and my CEC’s are separate (unfortunately!). I also have the ACE Health Coach cert. which I can renew with my Personal Trainer cert.
It really depends on what your goals in fitness are as to whether or not it is worth the cost of doing both. I started teaching about 25 years ago, and have been training since 2008. Training was a natural progression for me from teaching–and I love doing both. Right now I choose to work part-time (about 20-25 hours per week),and fitness is my passion so it is worth the cost to me. I find that having both certifications both helps me to train better and teach classes better. They compliment each other very well. It can be more lucrative to do personal training and teach small group training classes vs. teaching group fitness classes. Again, just depends on your goals.
So, it would be worthwhile for you to figure out where your passion is and go from there. Both are very rewarding, but in different ways.
Good luck
