Hello Sonja Anderson-Struzzo,
Your question has been asked many times. I don’t know if anyone will ever know the answer to your question. Why do you want to know this?
There are many fitness professionals who are “legal” and many who are “not”. There are many who are out of work; but, still hold their certification. There are many more who are not certified/trained but call themselves professionals. I believe you ask about truly trained professionals. I know of people who became certified personal trainers for their own benefit who most likely would not be listed in statistics.
I suppose you would want to contact the U.S. Department of Labor to ask how they classify fitness professionals, if Pilates and yoga are included.
Please let us know if you ever find out.
Natalie aka NAPS 2 B Fit.
Most of the department’s statistics come from a monthly survey of government and businesses. This is also how they get data on wages state by state.
Surveys are done by computer assisted phone.
I believe they categorize fitness trainers and aerobic instructors as one unit, and they are part of what is called recreational services. Moreover, they do not have a separate category for yoga instructors, so they are likely included.
You raise an interesting question about yoga teachers. If data is being pulled from a large gym I suspect they are likely to include yoga instructors among their fitness instructors. Many of the yoga people I know, particularly those who consider yoga as a healing art would not think of themself as a fitness instructor.
Natalie is correct that it would be difficult to get a really accurate count world wide. You could likely get a count of certified people by going through each certifying agency, but that would include people who hold a cert. but are not currently teaching, and it would not count people who have a degree but not a certification. You could probably get pretty close though.
And yes, I agree with you that that number is probably a little low.
That number sounds reasonable to me. There are about 1 million physicians in the US. I would think that there would be at least that many more physicians to fitness professionals. In the area where I work, I am the only fitness instructor working in the complex of offices/spaces. There are about 30 or 40 physicians working in the complex. I know that isn’t the norm, but it does point out that there are a lot more physicians than fitness professionals. And it is said that there is a shortage of physicians here in Hawaii.
