Anyone do team training? How much should I charge?
I have found setting a contract based on a specific amount of sessions and based on how many participants has been most effective and competitive for me when training teams. I generally train the team a minimum of twice a week, one day a week just doesn’t seem to be enough for results. Each market varies in how much to charge for a semi-private session. In my area a semi-private group session can range from 10.00-25.00 per person if not more. So if you setup a 4 week contract, and you have a hockey team of 15 players and you offer 2 sessions a week at a rate of 20.00 per session, then you would bring in 2400.00 (20.00×2=40.00, 40.00×4=160.00, then 160.00×15=2400.00) for the month. You could make the contract monthly, bimonthly, or quarterly whatever works best for you and the team. Be willing to negotiate but also be ready stick to your pricing and your worth. I hope this helps.
You do not indicate what level the team is. I assume it is not the NHL. But it is safe to assume that nobody is over 30 (and probably much less than that). Who will be paying you? The individual player or a club? Do you need to add travel time to the training time.
How many people will you be training at any given point in time. Are you expected to train position specific? All those questions would determine your level of preparation and thus the time you need to expend.
On the other hand, training a hockey team is a good resume item, and it will expose you to many business opportunities which will be profitable in the long term.
Obviously, there are many questions that influence your charge. Personally, I would not try to get as much as possible but look at it as an investment in my business future. Without having any answers, my gut feel would say that I would charge about 3 times my hourly rate for an individual session.
Good luck. It sounds like a lot of fun.
I’ve heard the general rule of thumb is 1.5x your hourly private training rate for partner training and 2x your hourly private training rate for small group training (3-6 clients).
For a large group like a sports team, I would agree with Karin–3x the hourly rate sounds reasonable.
I’ve tried to track down the source of these ratios directly, but I haven’t been able to find them online. I recall them as part of a business course on personal training I took from the NSCA.
Good luck!
