Any specific advice when training clients in wheelchairs?
I have some experience with this, but can you tell me a little more? What condition has them in a chair? Can they get themselves in and out? Do they have full use of their upper body? Can they activate abdominal muscles or even glutes? How old and physically fit? I’d love to give you some ideas but wouldn’t want to give stuff that doesn’t make sense or isn’t safe.
I’ll say this, dependent on your clients abilities they are only limited by your imagination! The more creative you are the more successful they become! I have some great stories to share.

I have had experience working with those afflicted with MS, and are working from a wheelchair. Upper body work is probably the best, in most cases, especially if he/she is an experienced wheelchair cyclist. Deltoids, pecs, midtrap and rhomboids are good target muscles. Since shoulder flexion is one of prime movements of a wheelchair athlete, I would emphasize anterior deltoid and pec repetitive movement against load.

I agree with the others. Here are couple of links to answers given to similar questions to yours in the past:

Thanks guys! Really appreciate the feedback. I just met the client today and she actually has a brain injury (10 years ago, 26yo female). So, the goal is to have her stand at some point. I’m up for the challenge, but looks like some research is to be done. 🙂
Sean, any experience with this type of injury? I like your enthusiasm!
