I think I have the answer for this – we need an inexpensive visible sound level meter hanging in the back of our fitness studios. We’ve designed a working prototype you can see here.
We’re also launching an Indiegogo (similar to KickStarter) campaign to raise enough money to fund the final design and manufacturing of these fitness studio sound meters. Info at the link above.

LaRue you’re exactly right – I’ve heard of near fist fights occurring in studios over arguments about sound levels.
Hi Rebecca. I agree that perhaps the best way is would be to ask your participants. However, by using this method, be prepared to get 10 or more different opinions, in which case YOU will have to make the final decision anyway (but “hey,” at least you will have asked participants their opinion). I think that this issue falls under the heading of “you can’t please everyone.”
