Alternate Quad stretch?
I have a client that has advanced osteoarthritis of the knee, she wants to postpone surgery as much as possible and concluded with her doctor that strength training will be optimal. I want her to stretch her quads a few time a day, however prone and side lying quad stretch is hard to reach and causes pain, the same for standing traditional quad stretch. What stretch would you recommend? P.S Hip Flexor Lunge stretch is hard for her to get off then floor
Hi Evelyn,
there is another option; it’s called Bent Knee Press http://indigokinetics.com/bent-knee-press-brian-leighton-2/. It is a MELT technique, and the picture shows Sue Hitzmann doing it.
Your client can hold the leg also behind the knee if that is more comfortable. I cue it in a way that I have the client imagine to lengthen the distance between the two knees as much as possible while going into as much of a posterior pelvic tilt as they can. You will notice that the leg on the ground will wing out to the side. Have the client keep the foot in place while moving the knee towards the mid-line.
