Advice for working with a client that has cerebral palsy?
I have the chance to work with an adult male client that has cerebral palsy. My trainer has received several requests from this man asking to start training with her, bur she does not have room in her schedule to take him on as a regular client. She gave him my contact information and he has reached out to me to help get him started.
This will be the first client I have worked with that has major medical condition. I am wondering if anyone has any advice they can offer about working with cerebral palsy clients? I have been a personal trainer for a just over a year and am a little nervous to take this on, but I want to help him improve his quality of life.
As a personal trainer can I work with a client that has something like cerebral palsy? Is there extra insurance or certifications I should have before doing so? Any advice you can offer would be helpful!!
Thanks!
Hello Ana Anderson,
It is good you are doing your research to keep your potential client safe and happy. I see you work with other trainers in a facility; I would ask them, also.
CP is classified, so, maybe the client can tell you their severity on the scale, which will help. You want to start slowly and stay well within the pain threshold and ability level. Do a consultation to see what they need and want as far as their goals and current ability. A balanced program of strength, cardio and flexibility within their comfort zone will be beneficial by improving body image, self efficacy and ADL. Working with their doctor will help you learn along with the client.
The CP site and ACSM books may also be helpful for you.
Take it slowly and work for a healthy lifestyle.
Thank you,
Natalie
