Hi am a bit confused on the whole coaching thing. I would like to expand my knowledge but having a hard time deciding which route to go. I am a stay at home mom with a personal training cert. and working on aquiring all the head knowledge before i go out into the field. I would like to access people as whole, fitness, mindset, lifestyle, etc. I see there are wellness coaches, life coaches, and now I see ACE has a health coach certificate. I was also considering the ACE lifestyle and weight management coach. Any thoughts out there on which gives you the most info and freedom to work with peolple on all aspects of health.
All of the available “coaching” certs are advanced KSA programs for certified Personal Trainers. They are intended to give the fitness instructor more scope of practice, but do not allow crossing over into more advanced scopes, like those of a Register Dietician. There is a grey area where recognition of the scope is not standardized or given status in all states/countries. Organizations like ACE and IDEA are working hard to improve the acceptance of all the fitness certifications (and why I am a member of IDEA, ACE, etc.). That is part of why these advanced certification courses are being created.
As to which is better, that is a difficult question to answer. There are pros and cons to all such courses offered by the various organizations. ACE, NASM, ACSM are all very well recognized. But it really depends on what the fitness professional puts into their studies and how much experience they have with the subject that makes the most diffference. I teach instructor courses and CECs. I tell my students that having the cert on their resume is good, but having proof of experience is great. So I recommend that they acquire the experience by being pro-active. Doing things like volunteering at Elder Care locations, after school programs, school athletic programs, athletic clubs (like running groups), etc. will go a long way to giving them the edge when it comes to getting hired or setting up their own business.
Karin is right! ACE just replaced the old Life Style and Weight Management Coach with the Health Coach certification. I am actually waiting on my materials which should come any day.
