Not much to add here, I’m with the others on this one. I also ask similar questions to the ones mentioned above. And just like Karin suggested, trust but verify!

Best,
Harris

Haha, good call Karin Singleton. 🙂

Hello Ebony Stoner,
I ask:
What triggers your asthma?
Are you under a doctor’s care, using medications as prescribed, and following the advice?
Do you have an inhaler with you while exercising?
Who is your doctor and do I have permission to contact them about this?
The conversation will of course go farther into more detail.
That’s four questions that can be combined, how’s that?
Take care,
Natalie

I specialize in training asthmatics and I also have severe asthma. I ask several questions, but the most important I ask:
1. Do they have a rescue inhaler and require they keep it on them (in their pocket, etc),
2. Do they have a medical id bracelet or necklace. Although we keep emergency contact information on file for our clients it isn’t always quickly accessible. Med IDs are also easier if EMT needs to be called or client needs to be transported to the hospital.
3. What type of asthma? EIA, allergic asthma or both. This will determine how and where I train them.

And of course they must have a doctors’ note clearing them for exercise if it is EIA. This is part of my normal paperwork and covers other health conditions.

Also, check out the article I wrote for IDEA:

Hi Ebony,

was this question no. 10 on a test?

I would first ask about triggers for a possible asthma attack, then about the severity of the attacks (eg. emergency room visit), inquire about the existence of an asthma action plan and ask where they have their inhaler to make sure that I can get it for them if necessary.

In addition, I would only train a client with asthma with a physician’s approval.
