Carol's Success Story

Carol is a 65-year-old woman who appeared to generally be in good physical condition. However, she was increasingly finding it difficult to carry out activities of daily living (ADLs), such as climbing stairs, carrying groceries out to her car, or walking for any length of time without fatigue. A basic fitness assessment showed that Carol lacked muscular strength and endurance and had low aerobic fitness, which was consistent with what she had told me during our initial interview (i.e., that she had been sedentary for quite some time). I prescribed a fairly basic resistance training program for Carol to increase her strength, body-weight exercises to improve her muscular endurance, and walking (both outdoor and treadmill walking) to improve her aerobic fitness. Carol showed very rapid improvement. Within 2 months of training with me, she had decreased fatigue and much higher energy levels. I also directed Carol to a physician who identified, through a blood test, that she was vitamin D deficient. In addition to working with me 2-3 days per week, Carol now takes a multi-vitamin plus vitamin D and calcium supplements. She has now begun learning more about nutrition and exercise on her own; however, she continues to train with me for the companionship and motivation that I provide, and also to continue to progress with her exercise program.
