Dawn's Success Story
About Me: I am 42 years old. I am a wife, and a mother of 11 year old twin boys and a 9 year old daughter. I work full time as a Human Resource Manager at a local financial institution.
My Fitness Journey: I started my fitness journey about one year ago in February of 2013. A former co-worker of mine started teaching Zumba classes in the evenings. A night out dancing with my friends sounded perfect. This is where my spark was lit. I was quickly hooked and was going to Zumba classes twice a week. The instructor then added a kickboxing class twice a week as well. This was a tougher transition for me because it was much more physically challenging. It was exactly the kick in the butt I needed. I gave it my all and started seeing results on the scale immediately. This is when I knew that if I could change my diet too, I could change my life. I worked out with this group for 8 months when the instructor announced she was no longer going to be teaching class anymore. She recommend that I try a class called Stability Ball/Kickboxing at this new fitness studio opening up downtown called Ignite. This is where my spark turned into flames.
Fitness Everyday: Finding time for fitness in my everyday life is not always easy. I try to fit 5-6 classes/workouts per week into my routine. Last summer when my kids were involved in Little League three evenings per week a fitness friend told me about the COUCH 2 5K app. I had never run a day in my life, ever, but needed to try to keep reaching for my goals. I would walk/run around the baseball fields during practices using this app. Eventually I ran my first 5K at Bay Days. It wasn’t easy but I ran the whole race. I recently ran the Get Lucky race in the cities with an outrageously awesome group of ladies from Ignite. What a great experience that was! I am still pretty new to running and am so happy to be joining a running group at Ignite! I’ve already received so many tips, pointers and encouragement from my fitness friends at Ignite that I’m certain I can reach my running goals soon.
Goals: My earlier goals were weight loss. I have lost 62 pounds so far!!! My goals now are more geared towards what I can do. I want to run the 10K at Bay Days. I want to run a ½ marathon at some point. I want to be able to do an unassisted pull-up. I want to do two more pushups than I did yesterday. Goals as small as I want to do better at each Insanity Fit Test keep me trying to do my best every day.
Retox: I love to spend time with my husband and kids on the weekends. The great thing about that
is now I can keep up with them and get involved rather than sit by and watch. We enjoy family cross country skiing and down-hill skiing. My boys like to go running with me. My daughter and I go hiking together. We all enjoy bike rides.
Favorite Class: I have many favorite classes at Ignite such as Insanity, Suspension Training, Stability Ball (love the kickboxing portion), boot camp, spin and Zumba. I couldn’t wait to try Hip Hop Hustle.
Favorite Music: I love to spin and workout to Pitbull, Mr. Worldwide
Motivation: What motivates me? Seeing old pictures of myself is motivation. Wanting to be a healthy
role model for my kids is motivating. The instructors at Ignite are all motivating! My new fitness friends at Ignite are motivating. Everyone at Ignite is at a different place in their personal fitness journey and it’s inspiring to hear each of their stories!
Words to Live By: When you feel like quitting, think about why you started and do one more! The instructors at Ignite make my workout as challenging as I want it to be while keeping it fun. They do this with a professional attitude that makes them all easy to approach when I have questions.
The reason I started taking classes at Ignite Fitness Studio is the convenience and the variety of classes they offer. The reason why I stayed is because of all the things I’ve gained along the way such as my new “family” of encouraging and inspiring women (and a couple of men), confidence, pride in what I have accomplished so far, and this ever improving healthier body and mind! I am somewhere in the middle of my fitness journey and still have a ways to go but the difference is now“.“..I know I can do it!
