I have been a personal trainer and running coach for the past 12 years. In 2005 I founded The Body Project, Inc. to train clients in a studio setting. In 2013 I moved my company to downtown Des Moines inside of a physical therapy clinic called Kinetic Edge Physical Therapy. I have my B.A. in Exercise Science and hold a certification in personal training from the American Council on Exercise. Additionally, I maintain the prestigious CSCS credential from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. I also coach the cross country and track teams at Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, Iowa. Since 2009 our cross country team has qualified for the state meet seven consecutive years. In that time we have had 5 top-3 finishes including state championships in 2011, 2012 and 2015. I was a competitive distance runner in high school, college and beyond with personal best times of 15:51 in the 5k and 2:39 in the marathon.

    My name is Ryan Schweizer and I am a senior at Dowling Catholic high school. Tim Ives has been my coach for cross country and track since I was a freshman. He is one of the best coaches I've ever had and I've learned a lot from him. He relates well with anyone and has great insight on almost any topic. Not only is he a great person to talk to but he is a great motivator. Not only will he motivate you to strive for greatness by he will help you reach this goal and even go beyond it. My high school career has been a good one and I could not have become half the runner and the man I am today if it weren't for coach Ives. He's truly one of the best and we here at Dowling Catholic are so blessed to have him.

    When I decided to pursue a lifelong goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon, I went in search of a coach knowing that I would not be able to push myself enough to reach that goal on my own. I stumbled upon Tim through an article he wrote for the Capital Striders newsletter. What a stroke of luck because he has been the best thing that has ever happened to my running.

    Tim and I have been working together for 2 years and in that time I have improved at every distance from the mile to the marathon. I went from running a 2 hour half marathon to recently posting a personal best 1:41.53 half marathon. While I have not yet achieved the Boston qualifying standard time, I am steadily improving and believe that it will happen soon as I have already cut an hour off my marathon time in the time we have worked together.

    While times and accomplishments in races are important, the thing that Tim has helped me with most and has changed me most as an athlete is increasing my confidence. He supports me in any activity I want to try and is up for the challenge of tailoring workouts to help me be successful. His workouts always start from my current state of fitness and move me at an achievable pace toward improvement. He pushes me outside my comfort zone but in a very safe and supportive way. His methods have allowed me to steadily improve my fitness which has helped me become more confident in my ability to compete. He has a very calm demeanor which perfectly offsets my sometimes overly critical and anxious nature. Tim is great about providing feedback and answering questions. His expertise as a coach and his success as a runner himself lends credence to the training plans he creates.

    I would not be the athlete I am today without Tim's guidance. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their fitness and overall health.

    My name is Jason Thomas and Coach Ives has been my track and cross country coach at Dowling Catholic for the last four years. Without him as my coach I am confident in saying I would not be anywhere close to the runner I am today. We have had an awesome relationship all the way through and I have never questioned his training philosophy and in turn it has never let me down. I always told him my ambitious goals and rather than saying we should set them a little lower, he had only encouragement and positive feedback which instilled a lot of confidence for me to go out and get them. He always has a positive attitude and keeps the mood light and relaxed but still serious to accomplish the workout at hand and do it well. I have achieved a great deal of success in my high school running career and there is not a single person who I owe more thanks to for that than Coach Ives.

    I went to Tim to help me get back to an active lifestyle. I have knee and foot pain that had kept me from getting out and doing things that would help me stay fit. I had gained a lot of weight and was feeling pretty clueless and hopeless as to how I was going to start down the path. I was even worried as to whether Tim would want to try and help me since I had so far to go to meet the goals I had for myself.

    Tim did not hesitate and asked for my input into what exercises I enjoyed doing so that my routine was not just what he thought I should do, but also included exercises I would not be bored doing. He is very engaging during the workouts. We have a lot of conversations during workouts which makes it easier to forget you are sweating!

    I am about 1/3 of the way to my fitness goals in just a couple of months with Tim. I have recommended Tim to friends and colleagues and I will continue to use him as I progress on my journey

    My Doctor told me I was “de-conditioned” and to get more active. I wrote up six goals for myself and gave myself six months to meet them. At the end of the time I had not completed a single goal.

    I took my totally out of shape, overweight, middle aged body into The Orange Planet and set up an appointment with Tim Ives. I’ve been working with Tim only a few months and have already met my goal of being able to walk at least 4 miles. I’m making progress on my goal to be able to climb the three flights of stairs in my office building without being winded at the top. I will have another visit with my doctor soon and hope see another goal met of getting on lower levels of medications.

    Tim is so easy to work with and a very good listener. He gently nudges me in the right direction. There is no pushing to do anything I don’t feel comfortable with, just encouragement to keep improving and to try something new (like the elliptical machine).

    Tim tailors his training to the specific client’s goals. I’ve seen him put other clients though all types of different actives, all based on that individual’s goals. Tim even invented an exercise just for my training partner due to some physical limitations that prevents her from doing the needed movement in a traditional manner.

    I highly recommend Tim Ives as a personal trainer. He is very knowledgeable and has an easy to work with personality and plans a personalized program for each client.
