I think it could be lack of oxygen or possibly they are a bit dehydrated? I would assist them with showing them how to take deep breaths and ask them to practice this throughout their day

I would take pushups out of their workout program. There are so many other ways to work the same muscle groups that won't impact wrists such as chest presess and flys If they insist! Have them use a counter or wall, that way they change the angle of the joint and its load.
