I’ve been a lifelong athlete, focusing primarily on soccer and volleyball. I excelled in competitive club teams for both sports, eventually focusing my training and passion on volleyball which led to a full ride athletic scholarship to Eckerd College. Over the years, I have worked with countless personal trainers to improve athletic performance and break exercise plateaus. I have taken notes of the good, the bad, and the ugly (AKA out of shape) trainers. I always had a strong presence in the gym but never spent much time in the “cardio area.” After the birth of my son, I had a whole new body and a completely foreign challenge: lose 45 pounds. I had never been over weight being that I’ve been very active my entire life. pregnancy (and those damn hormones!) changed everything. I was fat, weak, and slow.As I have done in the past, I enlisted the services of a personal trainer at my local gym. Long story short, the trainer told me since I had so much fat to lose, I needed more cardiovascular training in my life. His program consisted of lots and lots of boring cardio with a little bit of resistance training using mostly machines and tiny dumbbells (since women don’t want to get bulky like men ;) This type of training went against everything I’ve ever done to stay in shape. And I was definitely not a fan of long sessions on a cardio machine. I never had the challenge of losing so much body fat so I figured that the trainer was the expert and knew what he was doing. I followed the plan. It didn’t work, the plan sucked. I became one of those women that spent all of their gym time on an elliptical and never saw the results I wanted. I initially lost a little weight but I quickly stopped seeing progess. After a failed attempt to get my pre-pregnancy body back, I scrapped the trainer’s plan and went back to my athletic roots. I got off that dreadful ellipitical and made my place again in the free weight area. Within a few months, my body was back and stronger than ever. It was after reaching these goals that I realized what I should have been doing for others the same way I had been training my entire life.
