I've worked as a fitness specialist for 24 years teaching at universities & community colleges; consulting; providing continuing education for fitness professionals & providing management for health clubs & community outreach programs. Much of my work has been focused on personal training & teaching.
As a personal trainer, I create evidence based programs which emphasize injury prevention, spinal stability & balance. In addition, I design programs to reduce the risk of back pain & for fall prevention. The populations I've worked with include individuals who need pre- & post-rehab for orthopedic conditions (ie arthritis, carpal tunnel, back/knee/shoulder problems, hip/knee replacements), older adults & people with Osteoporosis & Scoliosis.
My teaching experience includes being a Master Trainer to fitness professionals; certifying them for Resistaball®. I've been a lecturer & group exercise instructor in Kinesiology departments at universities & community colleges as well. The settings I've worked within include corporations, residential facilities, hospitals & senior centers. I've also written & published articles, done field research & given lectures to the public.
I earned my M.S. & B.S. degrees at CSUF in Kinesiology & have an AA degree from Stephens College. For my master's thesis, I did a study with a program I designed for back pain prevention using methods for spinal stabilization with stability balls. The program addressed risk factors for back pain based on ergonomic principles. My research was published in peer-reviewed professional journals for ACSM & NSCA; which are are among the most respected organizations in the industry. I presented my findings at two ACSM meetings; this also entailed acceptance through peer-review. My work has been included in references for professional journals and presentations.
On several occasions, I have been featured in Shape Magazine. The first time was in an article I wrote as a success story feature. Later, I was recruited as a mentor for a pilot program. I've been interviewed by Laura Brown on FREE FORUM, KNX FM in Los Angeles & for Jade Magazine. In addition, I also worked as an assistant for an aerobics video titled For Women Only.
I always strive to grow by seeking continuing education regularly. Since my career emphasis changes from time to time, I strive to update my certifications in a manner that is reflective of my current endeavors. For example, when I stopped teaching group exercise to in order to focus my energies on personal training, it was no longer necessary to maintain certifications pertaining to group exercise. Because of this variance, I've successfully passed a number of certifications throughout my career within a variety of disciplines. Currently, I am in the process of preparing to take another personal training certification (ACSM).
