Press Release - 2003
IDEA Program Director Of The Year Award Presented To Carol Scott Of New
York, New York
Back to 2003 Press Releases
Anaheim,
CA – Carol Scott is the recipient of the 2003 IDEA Program
Director of the Year Award. This honor presented at the IDEA Health
& Fitness Awards Ceremony at the IDEA World Fitness & Personal
Trainer Convention, held in Anaheim, California, July 17-20 B recognizes
an individual who is a healthy role model, who demonstrates keen professional
commitment through community and industry involvement and whose outstanding
leadership inspires staff and influences both active and underactive
people to commit to a healthy lifestyle through successful, creative
and diverse programming. The IDEA Health & Fitness Awards –presented
by Propel Fitness Water® – are considered to be the fitness industry’s
highest form of recognition and have been presented annually since 1985.
As the national
group fitness director for Equinox Fitness Clubs, Carol oversees 15
clubs in New City and with her innovative programming, class participation
has increased by nearly 20% company wide. Her biggest challenge is meeting
the demands of savvy members by dazzling them with hip, fun and challenging
workouts taught by industry-leading instructors.
Carol’s focus is
to blend a wide variety of disciplines on her group fitness schedules
to enhance the lifestyles of Equinox members. She has been insistent
upon a strong balance between what she calls “competitive classes” (indoor
cycling, kickboxing, step aerobics) and non-competitive classes (Pilates,
yoga, NIA technique). This method of launching and implementing new
programs has encouraged different member markets to crossover into new
areas of the club, such as kickbox members into yoga, and yoga members
into dance.
As her boss, Harvey
Spevak, the Equinox CEO, says, “Despite her busy schedule, overseeing
all 350 Equinox Group Fitness Instructors, developing new programs,
presenting at international fitness conferences and running her own
company, (ECA World Fitness Alliance); Carol always finds time for the
individual member or instructor looking for a solution to their specific
goals or requirements. Her ability to manage and oversee projects without
losing track of the individual or smallest detail is one of her greatest
strengths.” Many share these feelings and Carol’s enthusiasm and support
has been felt by fitness professionals across the country, as she has
educated, nurtured and mentored so many of the leaders in the fitness
industry today.
As the
2003 IDEA Program Director of the Year, Carol will serve as an IDEA
spokesperson on issues pertaining to fitness programming. She will also
be profiled in IDEA Health & Fitness Source magazine.
Leading authorities
in the fitness industry developed the criteria for this award. A review
panel of IDEA members who are program directors judged the applications
and graded them according to the established criteria. Through this process,
three finalists were selected and the award recipient was announced on
July 17. The two other finalists for this award were Denis Semenikhin
of Moscow, Russia and Beth Shaw of Hermosa Beach, California.
“Program directors at fitness facilities must be leaders who motivate
their staff and ensure that they are able to meet the fitness needs of
their many different types of clients. As they reach out to sedentary
and overweight adults and undertake efforts to Inspire the World to Fitness,
a program director must develop innovative and effective fitness programming
that targets these groups. This award is IDEA’s way of recognizing the
important efforts of this key group of fitness professionals,” says Kathie
Davis, Executive Director of IDEA Health & Fitness Association.
The 2003 IDEA World Fitness & Personal Trainer Convention features
over 300 Educational Sessions from more than 100 of the world=s leading
health and fitness presenters. Inspire the World to Fitness is the focus
of this year’s conference and a wide assortment of lectures and workshops
will help fitness professionals address the twin health care challenges
of obesity and sedentary living.
