“Nia is like a two sided coin… on one side it is this amazing physical fitness program, on the other side, it is so fun and full of opportunity to learn about living fully in the body, you kind of forget your working out. Nia doesn’t have to be something that replaces your current workout…it simply has the capacity to make what ever you love doing, even better!”

First and foremost Nia is a physical fitness program. Nia is often compared to Jazzersize or Zumba because we dance and move our bodies. What makes a Nia experience stand apart? First, we dance bare foot, every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities; and second, Nia is low impact. We work with the body's design. Every Nia class has 7 Cycles beginning with a focus and intent. Setting a focus and intent for your workout will give faster, better, and longer lasting results.

Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: base, core and upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels. Nia is low impact, but impeccable with how we condition the body. Since we do not wear shoes, we can allow our bare feet to become our sensory receptors. NO fancy sneakers required!

Nia is a fusion fitness program, which means we draw on several modalities of movement to create a unique multifaceted exercise experience. Nia integrates principles from three martial arts (Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, Aikido), three dance arts (Jazz, Modern Dance, Duncan Dance), and three healing arts (The Work of Moshe Feldenkrais, Yoga, Alexander Technique). These movement forms add energy and variety to your movements and allow you to explore all of the diverse aspects of yourself. Nia is designed to deliver physical fitness and conditioning and just happens to fill the more therapeutic needs of life by not divorcing fitness from our mind, emotions and spirit.

A lot of folks have never heard about Nia, but 2013 marks Nia’s 30th anniversary.

Nia has a simple philosophy: through movement we find health! The body itself reveals the body’s way. Nia cultivates health, fitness, and well-being by choosing pleasure over pain. Through Nia, one can learn to listen to their body’s sensations and utilize the gift of sensory intelligence as a way to live and be present and strong in the body.

Step into your own joyful journey with Nia, and positively shape the way you feel, look, think and live.
