About the Author

Amanda Carlson-Phillips, MS, RD

Amanda Carlson-Phillips is a registered dietitian who earned her bachelor's degree in nutritional sciences, with a minor in chemistry, from the University of Arizona. She continued her education by earning master's degrees in sports nutrition and exercise physiology from Florida State University. Carlson-Phillips is committed to helping EXOS athletes, across all facilities, achieve their maximum performance potential through the integration of effective nutrition into their lives. She's delivered both educational seminars and individual consulting to a variety of professional and elite sports organizations. Carlson-Phillips speaks about the importance of improving nutrition for both sports performance and overall health to a variety of populations at coaching seminars, military educational conferences, college symposiums, and state and national meetings. She also contributes to many sports- and fitness-based publications, has edited various sports nutrition books and educational texts, evaluates current research for the American Dietetic Association's Evidence Analysis Library, and is an advisory board member of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. Carlson-Phillips works directly with the EXOS nutrition team to help create year-long systems of success for all EXOS athletes. She also coordinates the company's performance research, undertaking both case studies and peer-reviewed research to help EXOS stay on the on the cutting-edge of sports science.

Keith B. Wheeler, PhD

Keith currently serves as a consultant. Previously was Global Director of Medical & Scientific Affairs, Performance Nutrition, for Abbott Laboratories Nutrition Division. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in life science from Otterbein College, Westerville, Ohio. I earned both a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry from The Ohio State University. Currently I am a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine and a member of the American Society for Nutrition. Also currently I serve on the Board of Directors for the National Alliance for Youth Sports. I am a frequent speaker and lecture on sports nutrition and clinical nutrition to health professionals and various organizations. In addition, I have lectured to and worked with numerous professional and collegiate teams and organizations on the topic of performance nutrition. I have help develope nutrition edcation modules, programs and/or various related material with organizations such as the National Federation of State High School Associations, the National Wrestling Coaches Association, The National Alliance for Youth Sports, the National Strength & Conditioning Association and the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association. I have more than 25 publications in the areas of clinical nutrition and nutrition as it relates to athletic performance.

Dr. Marc Bubbs, ND is a Naturopathic Doctor, Speaker, Director of Nutrition for the Canadian Men's Olympic Basketball Team and Author of The Paleo Project – A 21st Century Guide to Looking Leaner, Getting Stronger, & Living Longer. Dr. Bubbs is also a regular contributor to Breaking Muscle,, Re-Find Health and a Nutrition Advisory board member of Strong Magazine, as well as the host of the Dr. Bubbs Performance Podcast.

Jenna Bell, PhD, RD, LD

Dr. Jenna A. Bell is the co-author of Energy to Burn: The Ultimate Food & Nutrition Guide to Fuel your Active Lifestyle (John Wiley & Sons 2009) and Launching Your Dietetics Career (ADA 2011), Nutrition Communications Consultant and member of the Editorial Advisory Board for Today’s Dietitian. Dr. Bell is a leader with the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics as the current Chair-Elect (2012-2013) for the Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group and past member of the Academy’s House of Delegates, Nominating Committee and New Member Advisory Committee. She’s been published in scientific journals, and appeared on the Daily Buzz, ABC, NBC and FOX affiliates, local and national radio programs and podcasts. Jenna is a Nutrition Advisor to international sports nutrition companies, and co-founder of Swim, Bike, Run, Eat!. She has provided nutrition seminars at major athletic events like the Boston Marathon, the ING New York City Marathon, Bank of American Chicago Marathon and the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kona, HI. Jenna is a two-time Ironman Finisher and completed three marathons. In addition, she has competed in numerous sprint and Olympic distance triathlons and road races. Dr. Bell earned her doctorate with Distinction in Health and Human Performance with an emphasis on Exercise Science at the University of New Mexico, Masters Degree with Distinction in Nutrition and dietetic internship, and Bachelors in Nutritional Sciences from the University of New Hampshire. She is a popular speaker and writer for IDEA Fitness Journal.

Steven Hertzler, PhD, RD

Steven Hertzler, PhD, RD IDEA Author/Presenter

I am a Senior Research Scientist at Abbott Nutrition, working with EAS Sports Nutrition. I have a BS in Dietetics from Viterbo College in LaCrosse, WI, and a PhD in Human Nutrition from the University of Minnesota. I am a Registered and Licensed Dietitian in Ohio. I have expertise in sports nutrition and carbohydrate metabolism. I am also a former competitive bodybuilder. I have 20 scientific publications and over 20 years experience as a dietitian.
