Students Eschew Buses, Walk to School Instead

Making News:

To cut down on noxious emissions, amp up daily physical activity and reduce traffic congestion, some Italian students have taken to the streets. Dubbed the piedibus—Italian for “foot-bus”—hundreds of students in Lecco, Italy, walk to school, led by paid staff and parent volunteers. According to an article published in the New York Times (March 27, 2009; www.nytimes.com; retrieved Apr. 6, 2009), the piedibus routes are generally less than a mile each and are estimated to have eliminated more than 100,000 miles of car travel.

Do you “drive” a walking school bus? If so, we want to hear about it. Send your story to rhalvorson@ ideafit.com.
